cicer: (Well this is awkward)

About two years ago, I got a Dell Inspiron laptop. It's great, and has worked perfectly ever since. Thing is, the warranty is almost up. I recently received an offer from Dell to renew the warranty for $300. This would cover things for three more years, although (of course) there's about a hundred little footnotes concering what would and would not be covered by the warranty. I am on the fence about whether renewing the warranty is a good idea, or if it would just be a waste of money. Any thoughts? Anybody out there who has dealt with Dell for warranty/repair stuff who would like to weigh in? People who are a bit more savvy about these things than I am? Anyone?

I have an Inspiron laptop that I love. When it was being weird, I investigated and found that sending it in to Dell even to be looked at was like 300 bucks. (I was able to discover and resolve the problem myself, as it turned out. Bad powercord.) If you plan to keep that laptop as opposed to chucking it for a new one if things go wrong, I'd think the warranty would be worth it. But you know, I bought an extended warranty evn for my Toyota, so.....

Yeah, I'm already on my third powercord with this laptop. The computer is great, but the powercords are awful and don't last long. I'm resigned to buying a new one every year or so. I do plan to keep this laptop for as long as I can, so getting a longer warranty might be a prudent idea. Thanks!

Hmm...I don't know anything about Dell, so I can't give you anything there. But in regards to a warrenty...they want $300 for it (to cover how long?), well, $300 is half, or a little under half, of a decent laptop. If your laptop goes bellyup in the next year, perhaps it would be better to just get a new one? You could put that $300 in savings and earn interest on it and then just buy a new laptop when your current one bites the dust. That is what I would do.

However, if you think that the warrenty is a good investment, the absolutely, go for it! I would want to know how long the warrenty lasts. $300 for one year, not so much, but for 3 years? Yeah, I think I'd consider that.

Hope that helps you! And good luck!

$300 will cover it for three more years, so yep, I'm definitely considering it. I'd rather keep my laptop for as long as I can, and I really don't have the money to buy a whole new one soon (this one cost me about $1,300, but it has all the bells and whistles, which is what I need since this is my primary computer). So I think this might be a good idea, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anyone more familiar with computer warranties than I am who thought this was a total ripoff. XD Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
