I'd recommend trying the movie Saiyuki Requiem; it has a standalone story's the best I've seen in terms of animation, so it could work to tell if you're going to be able to enjoy the entertaining crack in sacrifice to the poor animation and WTF filler. Also, it is the slashiest movie ever (film subtitle: "Everybody Is Gay For Sanzo, Including Sanzo, Except When They're Gay For Each Other") and has a gratuitous extended Gojyo shower scene.
