A torrent is nothing more than a file type that allows you to download a file (which if a video file will probably be either .avi or .mpg) using a bittorrent client. Bit torrent is a way of downloading files that depends on the number of people downloading the file at the same time. As you download, you'll also be uploading small sections to other people who are downloading the file.
So basically, you download a bittorrent client, open the bittorrent file, and connect with a group of peers that are downloading the same file as you. As you download snippets of file from that group of peers, you upload snippets for other members in the peer group. But you don't have to worry about any of that because the bittorrent client takes care of that for you.
