Real life minutia
Jul. 11th, 2007 05:07 pmI love living in a desert because of how it skews your perception of what qualifies as 'hot'. Yesterday, when it was 108 degrees, I said to my mother, "You know, the last few days have been pretty nice. I'm surprised it's not hotter, considering it's July now." She said, "I know, it's actually pretty mild out." It was only later when I remembered this conversation that it made me giggle. Of course, last Wednesday it was 114 degrees, and it almost always hits 120 at some point during the summer, so 108 isn't so bad.
I also love how empty the city gets during the summer. A lot of people shuffle off to their summer homes as soon as school lets out for their kids, and even though the number of people who stay in the desert during the summer has grown in the past few years, the streets always end up being totally empty whenever I go out during the day. It's really weird to pass by a parking lot that's usually filled to the brim and find it deserted.
My mother and I saw Evening a couple nights ago, and I liked it very much. A couple parts bugged me, but I would still highly recommend it. It's got a very unusual feel to it, and it's not like many of the other movies I've seen recently. Quite good.
Yoga class is also progressing fruitfully, though I was struggling yesterday since I'd missed the previous three classes due to being out of town. I was panting like a dog through the whole thing, and my abs and upper arms are ridiculously sore today, since the instructor worked on a bunch of poses that stressed those muscles. It feels good though. I always forget how much I like yoga until I start taking classes again.
I've recently started reading The Tarot Cafe again. I read the first three volumes months ago, and while I loved the art I got a little confused and irritated with the storyline. I picked up the next two volumes a couple days ago, though, and reread the whole thing, and now I'm infatuated with the series again. The art is just so, so pretty. Is anyone else reading this? I want to talk to somebody about it!
Writing is still slogging along. I've been in such a rut for the past several months, and I just can't seem to get out. Plodding along seems to be the only thing to do, though, so I plod.
