Title: A Soft Answer Turneth Away
Fandom: Saiyuki
Pairing: Sanzo/Goku
Wordcount: 359
Stage I: Pride, Before A Fall
Stage II: Envy, No Man's Happiness
Sanzo is angry. His irritation with Goku has grown and grown recently, and he does not know why. There is no reason for it, he knows that much. There is no cause for him to be so angry, at least, no more than usual. But the feeling of anger persists. It spills over into everything else, and he finds himself snapping at Hakkai when he asks if something is wrong, and yelling at Gojyo if he so much as opens his mouth. He’s more physically violent as well: he catches himself throwing things and he uses both his fan and his gun more often than usual.
At the moment, they have stopped at a town for supplies. Hakkai politely asked if Sanzo would like to accompany himself and Gojyo shopping. Sanzo grunted out a no, not bothering to even look at them. Gojyo made some muttered, snickering comment about it being that time of the month, and had to dodge the bullet that went whizzing past his left ear. After that, they both left rather quickly. Sanzo remained in the Jeep.
Perhaps he could get a few moments of peace now. Sanzo sighed and tried to ignore Goku’s presence in the backseat. He was being unusually quiet, and Sanzo vainly hoped it would last.
Sanzo blinked as he suddenly felt a pressure on his shoulder and a tickling brush of hair against his neck. With a start, he realized that Goku was resting his head on Sanzo’s shoulder.
All the bubbling anger he’d felt toward Goku lately (what was at the root of his current bad temper if he was honest with himself, which he wasn’t) rose to the surface. He refused to admit that he might still be angry about that girl at the inn.
He turned toward Goku, preparing to shove him away and yell at him, perhaps even hit him. He stopped when he saw Goku’s face. His eyes were clear, and he stared directly at Sanzo. Sanzo was somewhat shocked to find himself speechless. The anger had wilted away into a kind of shaky confusion, and for once, Sanzo does not know what to do.
