Well, that's one of the main Buddhist goals, and to reach that state of non-attachment is I think more or less to reach enlightenment (<- layman's understanding). However, generally speaking, truly enlightened beings would probably not be travelling West trying to stop a demon-king resurrection either... Maybe the Sanzo-ikkou were chosen for this mission because of how attached they are, rather than how much they're trying not to be.
